SV Symphony to hold first Special Needs Children’s Concert Friday

SIERRA VISTA — The Sierra Vista Symphony Association presents its first ever Special Needs Children’s Concert as an additional concert to the fifth grade Children’s Concerts.

A mother of a special needs child approached one of our board members back in April of 2025 asking if the Sierra Vista Symphony would consider adding a concert for children that require a more controlled environment for tactile and sound situations. There are many children who would not flourish in an environment where 500 or more children are expressing their delight through very loud voices and jumping up and down to the music.

The orchestra welcomes this excitement at these concerts but understands the need to present another type of environment for children with special needs considerations. We look forward to the end results being a positive experience for these children and their caregivers. A special thanks to those Board members who worked diligently to see this concert come to fruition – Lisa Heinemeir, Mike Jackson, Rich Laszok and Pam Enright.

The Sierra Vista Symphony’s two regular Children’s Concerts are focused on fifth graders throughout Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties. These concerts welcome 1,000 or more school children from many public and private schools. It’s a wonderful opportunity for these children to experience an in person live symphony orchestra performance. We are hopeful that this experience will open an entirely new perspective to these children, fostering interest and desire to learn musical instruments and to listen to and enjoy orchestral music of all genres. Star Wars music is a favorite that is well-known and very familiar to children. In this event, they enjoy hearing a professional symphony orchestra perform in front of them this music that they have otherwise heard during the movie.

These three concerts will occur the day prior to the Winter Concert, which will be held on January 10 at 2 p.m. at the Klein Performing Arts Center at Buena High School. Please join the Sierra Vista Symphony for this beautiful concert featuring works from Ralph Ford, William Grant Still, Howard Hanson and others, along with the Young Artist Competition winner Alannah Murphy performing on flute.
