Due to reductions in funding from the Department of Economic Security/Division of Developmental Disabilities over the past several years, along with an increase in cost of living, insurance expenses and health care mandates during that same time, we find it necessary to terminate our contract with the Division of Developmental Disabilities.
Although there is indisputable value in providing quality service to people with developmental disabilities, it is our responsibility to ensure the stability and longevity of our organization. While serving individuals in this demographic has proven to be a valiant part of our mission, we can no longer justify the expenses that exceed program funding; nor can we continue cutting costs that diminish the quality of service we are able to provide to our clients.
We will continue to contract with Fort Huachuca providing grounds maintenance and landscaping services, and with the Brian A. Terry Border Patrol Station in Naco, Arizona providing custodial services. During the past year, wages totaling $557,302 were paid to people with disabilities through our Fort Huachuca and Department of Homeland Security contracts. We are proud that throughout the past year, 100% of the direct labor for these contracts was performed by people with disabilities. These contracts will provide numerous jobs and stability for people with disabilities.
The Quality Work Environment (QWE) initiative provides a program-wide framework to implement AbilityOne Employer Best Practices, building on nonprofit agency ongoing efforts to integrate best, promising, and emerging employment practices into their business operations. QWE is a continuous improvement process that can be tailored to the needs of each AbilityOne agency and its employees. While the QWE process is designed to enhance the employment opportunities of AbilityOne employees who are blind or have other significant disabilities, all of the employees will benefit from the quality employment practices implemented.
Premier Alliances, Inc. is currently in the self-assessment stage of this process, allowing us to establish baselines, which will be followed up with measuring our agency’s progress, and continuously improving our employment practices.
